Thank you! That’s so exciting that you are coming to Taiwan. In Taipei, the main thing to do of course is EAT, but what I recommend is:
1) Taking the Maokong Gondola and eating at one of the tea houses. My favorite restaurant is the Big Teapot: http://taiwannaeatalot.tumblr.com/page/4
2) Visiting the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall and walking to nearby YongKang St for mango ice!
3) of course a visit to the 101. if it’s not too foggy, go to the top and stay for the night view!
4) Going to the night markets, particularly Shilin and Shida.
5) Sun Yet Sen Memorial Hall and the shopping area around Zhongxiao Fuxing/Dunhua
Since you only have 5-6 days, I would suggest doing Taipei for 2-3 and then going to Hualien for 2. I highly suggest spending a day there taking a tour of the Taroko Gorge and if you have more time, doing either shrimp catching or river tracing.
Have an amazing trip and let me know if you have anymore questions!!

Matcha Red Bean Snow Ice and Mango Snow Ice at Shilin Night Market’s Xin Fa Ting Snow Ice
Summer might be over but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a bowl of sweet refreshing ice topped with your favorite fruits. One of Taiwan’s most unique desserts, “Snow Ice,” differs from other ice desserts because it’s ice is made with of a combination of cream, milk, water, sugar and then frozen and shaved to look and feel just like snow! This shop in the Shilin Night Market serves over 20 flavors of Snow Ice, all under 90nt, with various other desserts on the menu.
